50% materials deployed, burnt offices threaten polls — INEC

The independent National Electoral Commission on Monday lamented the continuing attacks on its local government offices across the country.

The commission said the attacks could hamper its operations.

This was stated by INEC President, Mahmoud Yakubu, during the visit of a special pre-electoral political mission to the African Union to the commission.

PUNCH had reported that within three weeks, there were three attacks on INEC facilities in Ogun, Osun and Ebonyi states.

Yakub, however, again stressed that the commission would not be deterred by challenges, noting that it was prepared to conduct free and fair elections.

He said, “In the last three weeks, three of our local government offices were attacked in three different states across the country. The last attack happened yesterday (Sunday). Although there have been no casualties, much of the material procured and distributed for the election has been destroyed.

“The good thing is that so far, we have recovered from all the damage but this is a source of concern which should not be allowed to continue.

“I want to assure you that yes, we may have slight hiccups here and there, but overall, the Commission needs to go ahead with the elections and use technology for the purpose the way the law requires us to do so.” Validation and uploading of results of polling units using deployment.

The INEC chairman said that the commission had deployed 50% non-sensitive content ahead of the 2023 elections.

Yakubu said, “We are confident to say at this point, three months before the election, about 50% of the non-sensitive materials have been deployed in places. We’re making really good progress.”
