The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa, and the Union of Catholic Bishops of Madagascar (SECAM) (), Africa, Madagascar and the Isles, has elected His Excellency Richard Kuia Bavobr of Ghana as its new President.

Elections were held in Accra, Ghana during the 19th Plenary Assembly of SECAM, with 130 participants from all corners of the continent including cardinals and bishops representing more than 600 Catholic bishops in Africa.

The new president will replace His Eminence Philippe Cardinal Oedraogo from Burkina Faso.

Another cardinal, His Excellency Fridolin Besungu Anbongo of the Diocese of Kinshasha in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was elected First Vice President, while the Most Rev of the Diocese of Xai Zai in Mozambique. Lucio Andris Mundula was elected the second vice-president. ,

The new president of SECAM, His Excellency Richard Kuia Bavobr, was made a cardinal by Pope Francis on May 29, 2022, and will be officially installed a cardinal on August 27, 2022.

This is the first time since the inception of SECAM 53 years ago that a Ghanaian person has been elected as the President of SECAM.

SECAM, established in 1969 during the visit of Saint Pope Paul VI in Kampala, Uganda, was born out of the desire of African Catholic bishops present at the Second Vatican Council to speak with a voice on matters relating to the Church in Africa.

The symposium, headquartered in Accra, consists of eight regional associations:

Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC).

Association of Episcopal Conferences of the Central African Region (ACERAC).

– Assembly of the Catholic Hierarchy of Egypt (AHCE).

Association of Member Episcopal Conference of Eastern Africa (AMECEA).

The Bishops’ Conference of the Indian Ocean (CEDOI).

– Regional Episcopal Conference of North Africa (CERNA).

Inter-Regional Meeting of Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA).

– Reunification of the Bishops’ Conference of West Africa (RECOWA/CERAO).

About the Symposium of the Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM):
The Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) was born out of the desire of African bishops at the time of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) to establish a forum for speaking with a single voice on the issues of Africa and Belongs to the Church in Madagascar. Thus SECAM is the episcopal, continental structure of the Church Family of God in Africa that matters:

The 505 dioceses are grouped into 38 national or inter-regional episcopal dioceses and have approximately 250 million Catholics.

SECAM was launched on 31 July 1969 during the visit of His Holiness Paul VI to Kampala (Uganda). SECAM is headquartered/secretariat in Accra, (Ghana) and has a specialized office set up in Nairobi (Kenya) for translation of the Bible into African languages ​​and its distribution in Africa and Madagascar. In addition, SECAM is an observer of the African Union and is represented by the Cardinal Archbishop of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). A pastoral sermon titled “The Kampala Document” on the 50th anniversary of SECAM (July 1969 – July 2019) and titled: “Church Family of God in Africa, Celebrate Your Jubilee. Welcome Christ Your Savior” by the clergy of Africa to God’s people and Was promulgated for men and women with good will.

Following the celebration of this Golden Jubilee of SECAM, a new chapter opens for the Church Family of God in Africa. A ‘new Africa’, more centered on God, whose members become the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Mt 5, 13–14; kd n° 22, 133) with the hopes and concerns of the people and to guide them Towards Jesus Christ, the true Savior of humanity

In 1973 the bishops of SECAM established an Episcopal Communications Commission composed of dioceses who oversee communications in the 8 regions as representatives of the requested territories. It was supported by the Pontifical Commission for Communications and thus the Pan African Episcopal Commission for Communications was born, known with its French acronym, CEPACS: Commite Episcopale Pan-Africaine de la Communication Sociale. The Commission represents SECAM in matters relating to communications and is itself represented before SECAM by its diocesan president, who is currently Bishop Emmanuel Adetoys Badejo of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Nigeria.
