12th Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture Focusing on the achievement of the African Union (AU) since its inception two decades ago, despite its pursuit of unity, has highlighted the challenges the continent still faces.

Lectures in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, Professor Toyin Falola lamented the challenges that continue to plague the entire continent, including the state of poverty in which most Africans live.

“59 percent make under three dollars a day and 80 percent live under five dollars a day. So much has expressed concern. The estimated number of Africans living in extreme poverty is said to be 478 million. That’s a huge number.” , and as a result of the global commercial and economic shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the figure reached 490 million Africans who lived on less than two dollars a day.

Professor Falola has also lauded Africa’s ability to overcome adversity and turn harsh conditions into profit.

Falola said there is much to be celebrated in Africa.

“Africa will be defined by the success, the success of our humanity, which no one can take away from us, the success of our humility, which is well known, the success of our resilience. We survived the Atlantic slave trade, we are still here, we Survived genocide, We are still here, We have survived Imperialism, We are still here, We have survived Colonialism, We are still here, We have survived Poverty, We are still here, We are from COVID Survive, we’re still here. There’s nothing we’re not going to avoid.”
