Air Force celebrates 101 years

Air Force bases around the nation celebrated the Air Force’s 101st birthday on March 31, with the occasion providing an opportunity to reflect on Air Force’s history and consider how it will evolve.

In South Australia, Group Captain Andrew Hoffmann, acting Senior Air Force Representative South Australia and Director Information Warfare Directorate, hosted both the annual formation of the RAAF commemorative service and the Air Force birthday reception at the Torrens parade ground drill hall.

The two events included Air Force joining with the Governor of South Australia Frances Adamson, as well as dignitaries, veterans, partners, stakeholders and valued members of the Adelaide community in celebrating the Air Force’s 101st birthday, and thanking them for supporting the Air Force in performing its mission.

Group Captain Hoffmann spoke about South Australia’s proud connection with the Air Force dating back to World War II and how it has been home to RAAF Base Edinburgh for almost 70 years.

“From its modest beginnings in 1921, when the Air Force had more planes than personnel, the Air Force has grown into a potent, world-class force that Australia has relied upon in both conflict and peace,” Group Captain Hoffmann said.

“Through world wars, conflicts, peacekeeping duties and humanitarian assistance missions, the Air Force has operated across the globe.

“When Australia needed, the Air Force has been ready to respond.

“An aspect very evident today with hundreds of Air Force aviators from Edinburgh returning in the last week from Operation Flood Assist and Operation COVID-19 Assist after deploying around Australia.”

Then. Now. Always.
