AU Deploys Pre-Election Mission to Monitor Upcoming Nigerian Elections

The AU said that the AU Special Pre-Election Political Mission for Nigeria’s upcoming general election also includes the Heads of the Pan-African Parliament, AU Commission staff and independent election experts.
Nigeria will hold state elections on March 11, 2023, along with electing the President and the bicameral National Assembly on February 25, 2023.
The main objective of the AU Special Pre-Election Political Mission to Nigeria is to assess the state of preparation for the General Elections and to express solidarity with the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria.
The AU said the mission is part of overall efforts to support Nigeria with the aim of strengthening democracy, peace and stability in line with the mandate given to the AU to promote peaceful, democratic and credible elections. In Abuja, the AU mission is expected to engage with a wide range of key stakeholders in the electoral process, including independent national election commission, Inspector General of Police, representatives of parties, media, civil society including youth and women’s organisations, among others.
