Australia cruise to maiden T20 World Cup title
New Zealand lost another final after Australia’s power-packed batting lineup chased down 172 runs.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – David Warner took another shot at his critics and Mitchell Marsh scored a scintillating half-century as Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets to register their maiden T20 World Cup win.
Needing 173 runs after choosing to field, Australia, five-time 50-over world champions, once again lost captain Aaron Finch, but Warner and Marsh shared a 92-run second wicket partnership for their side in Dubai. Closer to glory. Sunday.
Warner was dismissed by the returning Trent Boult, but Marsh combined with Glenn Maxwell to take Australia past the finish line and win the only global cricket title for Finch.
Earlier, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson smashed 85 off 48 balls to take his side to 172, which was not enough. Australia’s power-packed batting lineup, which chased down the target in this year’s tournament, scored six out of six points.
“It’s huge”, said Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, who smashed Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi for three consecutive sixes to ensure Australia’s place in the final.
“It felt like a lot of people left us but we talked about Australia being the first team to do that and it feels really special.”

A healthy crowd – which included many Indian and Pakistan supporters who had bought tickets hoping for their teams to be in the final – were treated to a series of boundaries as they once again dominated the bat in both innings. .
Williamson, scoring 21, hit 10 fours and three sixes, but did not find enough support from the other end to take New Zealand to a competitive total.
In response, Finch’s early defeat failed to deter Australia’s attack, with Warner and Marsh hitting 10 fours and seven sixes in a joint.
Maxwell, who scored 28, joined Marsh and scored 66 and hit the winning boundary as the Aussies came to charge to celebrate the victory.
