Egypt to host African Space Agency headquarters

CAIRO- 24 January 2023: Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour said that space technology and the African Space Agency (AfSA) receive significant attention and support from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli.

Eshour made the remarks during a meeting with Mohamed Belhossein, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) of the African Union Commission (AUC), and the delegation that accompanied him to sign the agreement at the Afsa Headquarters. African Union Summit in February 2019.

Ashour said the Egyptian government is still committed to fulfilling its promise to host the permanent headquarters of the African agency, to realize the aspirations of the African people in a more advanced space industry.

The minister said the agreement provides the general framework to regulate relations between the Egyptian government and the agency, which will serve as a platform for research, innovation, technology as well as technical education in Africa.

Ashour affirmed his ministry’s commitment to dedicate all its capacity and resources to Egyptian universities, research institutes and innovation centers to ensure that the building of the agency is executed as desired, in cooperation with the factories involved in the project Ho.

Meanwhile, Belhossein commended Egypt’s support to Africa, especially in the fields of education, technology and science.

Belhossein said the support reflects Egypt’s leading historical role in the Arab world and Africa.

The agency’s headquarters construction project is expected to be handed over by the end of 2023.
