How the U.S. Military Helped Build Las Vegas

Americans’ attention turned this past weekend to Las Vegas, which hosted this year’s Super Bowl. But the city has long played an outsized role in the country’s—and the world’s—imagination as a symbol of entertainment of all kinds, and gambling most of all. That peculiar economy has given it a cultural weight far greater than its status as the 24th-largest U.S. city by population.
