Iran links ‘economic terrorism’ to global warming
Iran’s vice president has offered an unusual explanation for worsening climate change, blaming economic sanctions against the Tehran regime, as he spoke at the UN climate summit in Glasgow.
Speaking at the COP26 summit in the UK on Tuesday, Ali Salazegh, Iran’s vice president and head of the environment department, claimed that the worsening global warming was due to “Economic Terrorism”.
Adopting a familiar narrative, the Iranian vice president strongly accused US-led Western nations, which have imposed severe sanctions on Tehran after former President Donald Trump’s move to unilaterally abandon the 2015 accord that saw Iran’s Nuclear ambitions have been limited.
“An emerging threat to sustainable development is the rise of economic terrorism. Unfair and unfair economic punitive measures imposed on my country have targeted the well-being and health of our citizens.” Salazeghe said.
He said such measures are hindering access to new, green technologies and preventing relevant technology transfer; Salazegh said these are essential to national programs such as those aimed at improving air quality.

The Vice President argued that coercive measures and sanctions are in violation of the global sustainable development agenda and have consequences outside Iran.
Despite the sanctions, Salazegh argued that Iran has made considerable progress in developing a green economy, low-carbon industries and the use of clean energy. He also praised his country’s efforts to manage environmental hazards such as desertification, dust and drought.
According to the Iranian press, air pollution in Tehran kills more than Kovid-19. Ebtekar News recently reported that about 5,000 people die every year in the capital due to air pollution.
