Kigali summit: Over $4bn to be raised to end malaria in Africa by 2030 | TheCable

Global leaders led by African heads of state have announced the first in a series of pledges to accelerate progress to end malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

Commitments worth more than $4 billion were made on Friday at the Kigali Summit on Malaria and NTDs, held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Rwanda.

Historic commitments were made by governments, international organizations and the private sector, with the aim of ending the continent’s health burden by 2030.

In addition, 18 billion tablets were donated by pharmaceutical companies for the prevention and treatment of NTDs.

The Joint Malaria and NTD Summit, hosted by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, was organized in response to the immediate threat of a resurgence in malaria and NTDs, made worse by the challenges and funding of the COVID pandemic.

The summit was attended by world leaders including Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO); Prince of Wales; Melinda Gates, Co-Chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Osagi Ehanair, Nigeria’s Minister of Health.

In his speech, the President of Rwanda stated that quality healthcare is a top priority in the African Union and more can be achieved through collaborative action.

“Ensuring that all African countries mobilize the necessary domestic financial resources for quality health care is a priority for the African Union and our partners,” he said.

“If the pandemic has taught us one thing, it is that together, through coordinated and collaborative action, we can achieve much.”
