Nsfas increases students’ living allowance by 10%
The Financial Aid Council said that this increase is a significant development as the student allowance has not increased in the last three years.
JOHANNESBURG – The South African National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has increased the living allowance for students receiving 10%.
On Saturday, the plan announced it would scale back the payments at the start of the 2023 academic year.
It follows protests by students at some universities over a reduction in housing funding and historic debt, preventing students from registering.

The Financial Aid Council said that this increase is a significant development as the student allowance has not increased in the last three years.
It said that this not only acknowledges the impact of inflation on the livelihood of the students, but also removes the burden of the underprivileged students.
Nsfas said the increase was the result of a proposal made to the minister by the Union of South African Students.
