President Chakwera Calls For Refocused Efforts in Promoting SADC Vision – Malawi Voice

Gaborone, Botswana, December 13, Manau: President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who is the current SADC President, has called for united and re-focused efforts in the implementation of SADC programs and vision.

He said this while addressing the staff members of the SADC Secretariat at SADC House in Gaborone, Botswana on Monday.

Chakwera said there was still much work to do in fulfilling the vision put forth by the region’s founding fathers, which was to financially liberate southern Africa.

He said that the region has evolved from a coordinating conference to an active regional community focused on development and integration.

Chakwera said that the group from the outset stressed the need for countries in the region to work together, especially to deal with the challenges posed by crises such as COVID-19.

“I know that making progress on multilateral matters is no easy task these days, as we grapple with the effects of a complex and ever-changing enemy, the COVID-19 pandemic.

“But the complexity and longevity of the pandemic have exposed, not less, our need to work together and our interconnectedness,” Chakwera said.

The Malawi leader has since called for a renewed effort, focusing on strengthening the SADC community by leveraging areas of excellence and implementing priorities.

“Our task is simple, but not easy. Our task is to enhance regional integration and development. Our task is to unite against the common enemies of poverty, cross-border crime, terrorism, civil strife, climate change, natural disasters, unemployment and pandemics. To be a front.

“Our task is to strengthen regional relations among Member States to address new and emerging threats to our security, prosperity, freedom and dignity. Our task is to urge all our partners to do what SADC wants. There is a SADC that was once safe, prosperous, free and good,” he explained.

The SADC President also challenges its Executive Secretary, Elias Mapedi Magosi, to ensure that regional programs are strategically aligned with not only national policies and strategies, but also continental and global agendas such as the African Union Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Agenda. He then pledged his support to work hard to remove the institutional and political obstacles in the way of traveling to the region financially.

Chakwera has since announced the establishment of the Chakwera Prize for Public Speaking, which will invite recorded submissions from college students across Africa to express their innovative ideas to strengthen Pan-African unity.

On his part, SADC’s Executive Secretary, Magosi, reaffirmed the commitment of the Secretariat in fulfilling its responsibilities to uphold SADC’s image as a trusted organization.

Magosi then pledged to fulfill SADC’s ultimate objective of maintaining peace and security and accelerating socio-economic development through deeper integration of Member States.

During the meeting, Chakwera was briefed about the mandate, functions and structure and division of responsibilities of the SADC Secretariat.

They were also taken through the overall status of the SADC priorities and the regional integration agenda.

Upon arrival, the President visited the SADC Library named after the first President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere, to appreciate the SADC History Collection.

He also unveiled a placard in honor of his visit, a SADC tradition carried out during the visit of a sitting president to the Secretariat.
