
Sudan: Former Prime Minister Hamdok Lists Steps to End ‘Catastrophic’ Sudanese Conflict
Cape Town – in a series of tweetsIn 2010, former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok called for cooperative efforts to end the conflict in Sudan. Hamdok warned of a “humanitarian catastrophe” if the conflict continued, saying: “This war could cause a global emergency unless it is stopped immediately.”
Hamdok welcomed the work done by the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development to secure peace and listed five priorities, with global leaders, non-governmental organizations and other partners helping to guide peace-keeping efforts can do. These:
- An immediate and verifiable ceasefire for the sake of the citizens of Sudan
- An agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) for permanent, reliable and secure humanitarian corridors and the protection of critical infrastructure
- Urgent talks between SAF and RSF to negotiate a permanent ceasefire
- Involving Sudanese citizens in peacekeeping forums
- Resumption of a political process and transition to democracy
In concluding his appeal, Hamdok called on world leaders to prioritize achieving peace in the coming days. He added, “I have also managed to talk to several African leaders and leaders of international organizations. I was assured that Sudan is not alone and that we have friends we can count on.”
