“Worthy Of A Great Power”: Russian Minister On India’s Global Stance

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday accused Western countries of not being able to issue a joint communique for the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, saying their “rhetorical statements” about Ukraine did not help and They were “harmful”.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the meeting, Lavrov appreciated India’s “highly responsible” and “befitting a great power” stand on key issues of the global agenda.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the G20 meeting, the Russian minister said the prime minister had presented the country’s “balanced and responsible position” as the G20 president.

“He (PM Modi) was not just speaking about some isolated individual situation, as the West is trying to divide the geopolitical picture into separate episodes,” he said. In the address, Modi spoke about the general assessed the situation around the world in words.” Said.

Lavrov’s comments come amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and India’s diplomatic crackdown on the issue.

Lavrov said that the declaration could not be adopted at the meeting because of “rhetorical statements” about Ukraine and their “so-called” presentation of the situation as “Russian aggression”, which did not help.

The Russian Foreign Minister said that the speeches of Western countries and the G7 countries were becoming emotional and “damaging” the process of discussing the G20 agenda.

“The final document was not adopted by the ministers because Western countries insisted on the text that was agreed upon at the G20 summit in Bali last year. They were completely ignoring our argument that since then much A lot has changed, a lot has happened,” Lavrov said.

He said that the arguments of the Russian side, such as the demand for an “impartial investigation into the terrorist attack” on the Nord Stream pipeline, were not considered by the West.

Lavrov told reporters through an interpreter that the announcement was put on hold and the outcome of the discussions would be described in a summary, about which the Indian President would speak.

He also said that the African Union would be a full member of the G20 like the European Union.

Lavrov stressed that it is the right time to reform the UN Security Council. “We have reaffirmed our position to do this by expanding the representation of developing countries. We have reaffirmed our position that there is no need to give additional seats to the West and their allies in the UN body The West is over-represented.” They said.

Lavrov said that Russia’s relations with India can be described as a privileged strategic partnership. “It shows the special character of the relationship from India’s independence till date,” he said.
